Reducing Fatigue in your Elderly Parents and Improving Memory

June 24th, 2009 | Posted in Health and Fitness   Add Comment

A few tips for reducing stress in dealing with elderly parents helping with improving memory is what this article is about. Elderly parents can be a a lot of stress and a medical challenge. In fact some elderly parents seem to think life is about having the best doctors and their self worth is actually determined by the number of doctors and specialists that they see–a subject that deserves it’s own article.

My mother started having symptoms of fatigue along with an irritable bowel and stomach twenty years ago. I took her to a reputable iridologist (reads the iris of your eyes) who made dietary adjustments (removed fruit and sweets from her diet) and started her on various supplements. Seems that my mother’s diet got skewed–she prefers fruit to protein and after several years of overdoing it with fruit, it fueled her symptoms.

The nutritional supplements and dietary change got her back to normal for a few years until she once again began abusing her diet with coconut syrup and fruit. The symptoms were very similar to what she had before. By now the iridologist had moved away and I have to find another iridologist or a new physician for her. I didn’t live with my mother so I wasn’t privy to her diet but suspected her symptoms were diet related. She, on the other hand, was certain she had some kind of infection similar to what her mother died from fifteen years before.

Finally I found a doctor and took her for weekly visits. It was a twenty minute trip and I soon became frustrated. To cut to the chase I began sitting in on the visits and within two visits it became evident that my mother had a severe case of Candida Albicans. I guided the doctor into having her remove the coconut syrup, sweets, and fruit and within a month she was feeling better once again.

Three years later, my mother’s symptoms returned along with a urinary tract infection. The doctor we had seen was no longer in practice and we had to find another one. The new doctor was young and I hoped would be nutritionally oriented–he wasn’t. He ordered a ton of tests–upper and lower GI track which showed nothing. He treated her for the urinary tract infection with an antibiotic (as I expected) and she responded by having panic attack in addition to all her other symptoms. Ultimately he decided she was suffering from depression and prescribed Prozac. She became more fatigued with more episodes of panic and continued stomach problems. Unfortunately I didn’t sit in on these sessions and now I wish I had.

My suggestions that she look at her diet were met with certainty on her part that she had a tumor in the stomach. Ultimately she got fed up with the depression diagnosis and we went searching for a nutritionally oriented physician. This time I decided I would accompany her in every session. With my direction, the doctor ordered tests to once again confirm the presence of Candida Albicans. Six months and a dozen doctor visits later, my mother’s panic symptoms were gone along with all stomach and GI track issues. However, the fatigue continued even after many nutritional supplements and chelation therapy with EDTA.

My mother stayed away from sugar to the extent she believed herself to be diabetic–for a while, but her energy never returned.

A year or so later her diet again shifted to carbohydrates in the form of fruits and cookies from the health food store. The fatigue worsened and her stomach symptoms again reappeared. She wouldn’t listen to my dietary advice as she was certain she had this mortal infection. I met with her doctor privately before her session and shared my point of view regarding her diet–he agreed. During the visit he questioned her about her diet. She was eating primarily carbohydrates with no vegetables and little protein. He “read her the riot act.” She began adding veggies and protein and began feeling better.

Her regular doctor wasn’t available for her next med check (Armor Thyroid) and she saw one of the other affiliates in the same office. She never went back to the doctor who read her the riot act, began bad mouthing him as being a bad doctor and she continued being fatigued.

Her new doctor was new to the field of medicine and easy to work with. I suggested a test for Lyme disease and he concurred. We ordered a test from Central Florida Research Center at 1200 S. Pinellas Ave., Units 11 & 12, Tarpoon Springs, Florida 34689 (Phone # 863-956-3538). Chronic Lyme disease often shows up negative with standard tests. The lab uses microscopy and finds it when it’s often missed by standard laboratory techniques. Sure enough the tests came back positive and antibiotics were started.

Unfortunately, she couldn’t tolerate the antibiotics nor the naturopathic remedy of cat’s claw to replace antibiotics. About this time she met a man who recently lost his wife. She had an obvious renewed interest in life and with a fairly strict diet her energy returned–love conquers all.

With the passing of time, for various silly reasons, she didn’t allow the romance to develop–fearful of what others would say. Nothing I could say would make a difference–her limitations are owned by her and her alone which could be the subject of another article.

Feeling much better, her diet began expanding to include more fruit and carbohydrates and within six months I took her to emergency at the hospital. Once again she was certain she hadcancer and was discharged after a half dozen negative tests.

Now, you’d think that with all her past experience with diet, she’d be open to getting back to a healthy diet. However, her memory was significantly compromised. she had trouble remembering anything for more than a few minutes–a symptom of Lyme disease.

Again, I worked with her doctor in shifting her diet away from carbohydrates. But what’s left to eat? She dislikes meat of any kind (especially fish) and thinks eating two broccoli crowns a week is adequate.

At wits end, I ordered a Vita Mix and began making her a drink comprising of a stalk of celery, a clove of garlic, a red beat, and a carrot with a cup of water. I told her doctor of my plan and he suggested I add protein powder, Pro Biotics and Intestinal Support with L-Glutamine (nutrients for the intestinal track), I went one step further and added a dropper of cat’s claw (for the Lyme disease).

After six weeks of shifting her diet towards meat protein and daily vegetable drinks her memory improved dramatically and even in the absence of romance, her energy returned.

Instead of wanting to see her doctor every day for relief, she now looks forward to her daily vegetable drink–a quart a day.

I suggest that if you want the best of care for your elderly parents and reduce your own stress accompany them in the visits with the doctor, look at their diet to make sure it’s not lopsided (older folks regress to child like preferences), and the drink I make with a Vita Mix will be healthy for every one–you as well as your parents.

Managing Stress–The First Defense to Manage Stress–Breathing

June 17th, 2009 | Posted in Health and Fitness   Add Comment

The first defense to managing stress is not Tylenol, Motrin…, but instead deep breathing. Caution, if you suffer from panic and anxiety and or agoraphobia, this technique is not recommended until after the symptoms are history. This is because breathing techniques require internal focusing which is not recommended for anxiety sufferers. For them external relaxation techniques are recommended–see the resource box.

As we react to stress, it is normal that our breathing is immediately affected. It becomes shallow and upper chest which is actually part of the defense mechanism. Even that stress relief sigh is usually a tense upper chest unhealthy breadth.

We generally make three basic mistakes in breathing:

  • Then when we do take a deep breadth, we force our lungs to expand against our chest putting chest muscles in spasm. This can create chest and back pain.
  • Some of us lift our shoulders to take in that deep breadth. It’s called “clavicle breathing” and it contributes to neck and headache.
  • We’re so consumed with our appearance that we learn to hold in our stomachs which greatly limits our breathing to the upper chest.

Life is about stress and as we adapt to higher and higher levels of stress from one year to the next, our normal breathing becomes tense. Even as we sleep, we may breathe in a tense manner. The tense breathing also starves the body of much needed oxygen, affects our posture, and blocks our Chakras–the natural flow of energy through our bodies.

No matter what the physical health problem–back aches, headaches, muscle pain… (all direct effects of stress), or disease such as cancer, heart disease… it’s important to address breathing (except for anxiety sufferers as previously noted). The problem is that no one makes any money from deep breathing. No drugs are required so you will not hear an announcement on the radio, “Remember to do your stress reduction deep breathing exercise!”

Look for times during the day when you are feeling defensive, in a rush, under pressure, stressed… It’s during these times that instead of tensing as you normally would, that you instead remember to do your stress relief deep breathing.

And all you have to do to engage your first defense against stress is to consciously become aware of your breathing. Then shift from your upper chest tense breathing consciously to an abdominal breath.

How to take an abdominal breadth—the first defense against stress:
• Let your abdomen and stomach relax.
• Breathe down through your chest into your stomach.
• Let your stomach expand outward.
• Let your chest expand slightly at the end of the breadth.

As you exhale:
• Pull your stomach inward.
• Expel all the air up through your chest.

If you can hear yourself breathe, you are breathing too fast. Ten to twelve breaths per minute is fine. If you feel your shoulders lifting as you inhale, it is a tense breadth. Just let your shoulders be loose and limp as you inhale and exhale. Let your arms hang from your shoulder like rope.

If you have the time, take a class in Yoga breathing to get in some serious breathing. Yoga will provide many healthful benefits.

When to do your deep breathing: Make a list of times during the day when it would be appropriate to take advantage of the deep breathing stress management technique such as:
• Whenever you’re at a red light.
• Before answering the phone or making a phone call.
• As you’re waiting for your computer to load a program or shut down.
• Before eating or drinking.
• Before entering a building or an office.
• As you listen to someone conversing with you.
• Whenever you can remember to take a deep breadth.
• Whenever you notice yourself feeling stressed.
Remember, no one makes money on deep breathing so you will not hear an announcer on the radio reminding you to take your deep breadth exercise to manage stress.

Online Hypnosis Resources

June 8th, 2009 | Posted in Self Help and Motivational   Add Comment

What do Tiger Woods, Brett Favre, Matt Damon, Jackie Kennedy, and Kevin Costner all have in common? They have all utilized self hypnosis programs to improve their lives. What are the benefits of self hypnosis, and where can you find free hypnosis online resources?
The American Medical Association approved self hypnosis in 1958 as a certified treatment alternative for a variety of behavioral issues

The benefits of self hypnosis, or self relaxation include:

  • Eliminate phobias
  • Lose weight
  • Improve sleep
  • Manage stress
  • End procastination
  • Increase self esteem

Hypnosis has been typically been portrayed as doctors swinging watches and chanting “sleep..sleep” or as low end stage performers getting people on stage to bark like dogs. This is far from the truth and doesn’t accurately represent the power of hypnosis and the ways it can help deal with the stress and anxiety of everyday life.

Hypnosis is simply the act inducing a deep state of relaxation. In this state, the subconscious levels of the mind are opened and people are generally more open to suggestion. This can be used to influence behaviors and modify reactions to specific events or stimuli.

Self hypnosis is really nothing more than self relaxation. There are multiple methods that you can use to induce a state of deep relaxation. One of the most popular is the use of audio stimulation. Scientists have proven that our brains respond best to audio input, especially when it comes to inducing changes in mood or behavior.

There are many free online resources to get you started. They typically come in the form of downloaded audio programs that can tailored to specific issues such as losing weight or stopping smoking. Or they can be general stress relief music programs that encourage the brain to relax and eliminate the physical and mental symptoms of extended stress that can be so damaging. Try them out. They do work and they can help you manage stress and get rid of bad habits. Learn more about a couple of quality free hypnosis online programs.

Parasites of the Skin that Cause Disruptive Itchy Skin

June 3rd, 2009 | Posted in Health and Fitness   Add Comment

It’s 3:00 am, your sleep has been interrupted by something crawling on your face, legs, private parts-and you don’t know what to do. First you wonder if it’s your imagination, but then the crawling feelings are accompanied by a biting, stinging sensation–sometimes it seems to be from under your skin. You get out of bed, turn on a light and take a look to see what’s causing the problem. You see nothing. Hoping for relief you scratch it. Moments later, the biting returns and it’s relentless. The next day you may find a rash developing or what appears like bites on your skin.

The only evidence of something going on is that you might find a gritty sandy like substance-black specs-in your bedding or some strange fibers developing on your skin or or tiny sparkly specs of light reflecting sunlight on your arms.

In some cases, it looks like a mosquito bite or the beginnings of a zit but it never goes away. In fact it multiplies in a short period of time.

What’s causing the biting, rashes, lesions, and what do you do about it? First you try some over the counter remedy such as Benadryl or Gold Bond medicated powder and there’s no benefit. Then you go to your doctor expecting a prescription for a skin cream to quickly eliminate the problem. Your doctor examines you and can’t find anything wrong except that he accuses you of scratching your skin causing it to inflame. You might convince him to prescribe something like Quill or Elimite and it works for a few days and then it’s back to the hell of itching and biting. Finally your doctor may take a biopsy (plug sample) and you’re looking forward to finally identifying the causative agent. The test comes back negative and eventually your doctor suggests to you that it’s general nervousness, anxiety, stress, Roscacea’s Red Face, in your imagination, or worse yet that you have acrophobia. This news is almost enough to give you an anxiety panic attack.

Actually, you’ve may have been invaded by one of several strains of skin parasites. While most skin parasites are harmless, there are some skin parasites such as Morgellons (of unknown origin), unknown to most doctors, that can make life a living hell.

Job, of the Old Testament in the Holy Bible, may very well have been the first human on record who suffered from these skin parasites which are in the form of collembola, skin mites, skin fungus, and or nematodes.

Some species of parasites that usually live outdoor on plants and animals can adapt to living both in human skin and bring protozoan, bacterium, and fungi organisms that live systemically (in the blood). Without guidance in an effective treatment the parasites can reside in one’s skin for years and make scabies (a form of mite) look like the common cold.

To further complicate life, this skin problem can be easily transmitted from animal or human to human by simple contact, i.e., beauty parlor, lying down on an infested couch or rug, trying on new clothing in a store that was tried on by someone who was infested….

My hell started from a cloud of dust that descended upon me after I pulled a strangulating vine from a tree in my back yard so the medical specialist I consulted couldn’t pull that acrophobia stuff on me. Early on I experimented with garlic. I tried other things like curry, but garlic was the ticket. I started with 30,000 mg. of garlic per day and ended up at around 240,000 mg. per day before I freed myself of the parasitic itchy bity symptoms. For me, garlic completely tamed down the symptoms of the itchy parasites to where I could be human. Of course I tried many different medications during this time and each time I went off garlic to see if the medication or remedy was working, it would flare up again because none were working. Eventually garlic lost its magic and it was back to itching hell.

Fortunately shortly thereafter, I discovered the value of the diet which is called the King Diet. It was the first hope I had in managing stress of my life. In fact I’m convinced that no treatment will work without getting on the eating diet and staying on it. There are foods such as fruits and many carbohydrates that feed the parasites and foods that starve them. I started it as an elimination diet–ate only eggs initially and within a few days I was itch and bite free–it worked that fast for me. It took over ten years to discover all the nuances of the diet so I could enjoy foods like shrimp scampi, chicken in butter sauce…

It’s a three stage diet, the first of which is very strict. As stage I is successful, one can often advance to Stage II within a week or so and eat more leniently. It didn’t take long to think I was cured, but every time I went off the diet for a week or so, the itching and biting returned. In time with certain medications, I could advance to Stage III of the diet and enjoy limited types of fruit, honey, chocolate cake…

Suffering from skin parasites raises some important questions. How do you bathe? What skin creams or lotions provide results? How do you get skin parasites out of your bedding, furniture, rugs…? Although your doctor has no answers to these questions there are real down to earth answers to get your life back to normal.

My wife was attending graduate school some time back, and she needed a computer. We shopped around and found the perfect little notebook computer for all of her graduate school needs. After purchasing it, we declined those added year insurance plans. Reason being is that the technology outdates so quickly that it just doesn’t make economic sense to do so.
stress treatment
Well, as she was still working at the time on here day job and attending classes via the web at night or odd hours more precisely. At one point I heard a loud thud. I though a gun had been discharged or something.

I went into the living room and there she was with the notebook on her lap. Unfortunately, she did not tell me what happened straight away. But the next day I found out because her computer no longer was working. How sad but true. You cannot drop those machines and expect them to work continually. This was not one of those industrial grade laptop computers but a Toshiba. Delicate with nice color LCD monitor. That computer was new by about 57 days. No warranty covered damages of course. And we were out of $989.00 bucks in our budget.
stress symptoms
To add insult to injury, she still needed to get the work done. That is code for now I had to give up my computer. You talk about stressful. That was very tiring. What you had was two people trying to get online to take care of essential business. So, the stress that I felt by having to go to bed and get up at 3:00 am in order to get online was tough. It did demonstrate to me just how hard she was working on her masters degree though.

One time I did this and got into my office at 4:00 am. I walk in and she was typing here paper there. She still had to go to work the next day, but she was so dedicated towards getting her graduate degree. I am proud of her accomplishment.
stress symptoms
Some of the signs and symptoms of stress are more prevalent than others. One of the biggest problems folks have with chronic stress is just admitting that it is there. It is as if, we feel if we admit to stress that we are going to be considered weak or needy or something. This is the furthest thing from the truth.

Okay one more story here. My daughter Dances competitively. She gets really worked up whenever they have a competition. Everyone experiences stress differently. Her was is to start giggling and laughing almost uncontrollably. Sometimes it is tough to get her settled down. But other times we just join in with her until she is tuckered out. Then its time to get serious.

We’ve been talking with you about chronic stress. The signs of the times are that we are all on pins and needles. From the economy to the Wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. These factors and more are taking their toll on us all. There are something you can do something about and the resource below will lead you through to that peaceful place where your stress is less out of control. And you are happy and joyful for the life God has given you.

Change in the Workplace Stress Management

May 9th, 2009 | Posted in Womens World   Add Comment

Workplace Stress Management can have a telling impact on employee productivity, efficiency as well as satisfaction. Nothing can be more stressful for managers than to handle stress brought about by workplace change. Change can affect the workplace in many ways, with the negative side of it always bringing along considerable stress to some.

Workplace change is usually inevitable in the business world. Changes in the economy and the competitiveness between businesses are some of the causes of changes in the workplace when most may least expect it. Businesses always run the risk of having to stage lay-offs, personnel downsizing and even bankruptcy. And when these changes happen, the employees of the affected businesses go through quite a stressful situation having to deal with unemployment and an uncertain future. The management even has the more stressful task to inform employees about it.

It is important for management to try to break the news of a workplace change in a less abrupt manner as possible. Communication would be very important in such circumstances. Efficientand timely communication will help affected employees better understand and accept such upsetting and stressful news.

One of the best ways to communicate massive changes in the workplace is to engage key communicators to bring the news to the employees. While it may sound logical to have the CEO speak to the entire group of working personnel in a company-wide meeting, he or she alone may not be able to give the details more effectively on all levels. The CEO of the company alone may not be able to satisfy employee questions and concerns.

Having other people such as supervisors or team leaders to handle the job of communicating any workplace change would surely be more efficient and effective. By having the company’s front-line supervisors and maybe team leaders address employees under them and answer their questions, this helps communicating change more efficiently accessible to more employees and may take less time to make them understand and accept the unfortunate news.

But aside from having several people handling the stressful news of change to company staff. It is also as important for the management to create an effective message. And since companies are comprised of different departments and levels, the message of change should be designed to cater to the information needed of these different levels. In short, the message should cater and fit to a specific audience in order to be more effective and hence avoid possible confusion as well as additional stress.

Efficient communication of change in the workplace means that information required by different levels of the company should be satisfied. Others may stop at citing the reasons why change is a good idea for the company. Other companies may only try to communicate only what the changes affect the corporate level.

Disregard for providing information that are of real concern to employees, such as how the change may affect their future in the company, can really add considerable stress and many sleepless nights to many people. It certainly is not a good Manage Stress for a company that is going through changes.

Stress Relief Management Tips For Teens - How To Avoid Stress In Your Teenager Years

May 7th, 2009 | Posted in Health and Fitness   Add Comment

We all go through it - the teenage years and some handle it better than others. Stress management relief for teens has become big business today with teenagers looking for help to manage their stress levels during these important developmental times.

What causes stress in teenagers. Here’s a short list:

- boyfriends
- girlfriends
- high school
- college
- issues at home
- bullying

We could go on but the bottom line is, many teens prefer to keep things quiet which only leads to more stress and more problems. Managing teenage stress is not that difficult and if you are going through what seem tough times now then take a look at these stress relief management tips for teens.

Teen Stress Relief Tips

1. Breathing exercises and muscle relaxation techniques can be valuable weapons in the battle against stress. Here’s a simple breathing exercise that can help induce feelings of well-being: breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of six, hold the air in your lungs for a count of six and then breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of six.

2. Repeating this two or three times helps to oxygenate your blood and when this oxygenated blood reaches the brain, it can trigger the release of chemicals that help to relax you – no drugs required!

3. You can also try lying in a darkened room with relaxing music playing and progressively contract and relax the muscles in your body. Start with your toes and gradually work your way upwards to the top of your head. It helps if you think of a place where you felt particularly happy, thus inducing a positive frame of mind.

4. As a teenager, you will often feel that no-one understands what you are going through, and that you are all alone in the world. The fact is that everyone was a teenager once. This is bad news for your sense of uniqueness, but good news in that you may find parents, teachers or other adults more sympathetic than you might expect. If you don’t want to talk to an adult, try an older teenage friend or relative.

5. A word of warning, though. A minority of adults abuse positions of trust to prey on teenagers sexually. One should always be wary of being alone, unsupervised with an adult, however well you think you know them.

6. For many teens, a major cause of stress is the pressure to be one of the cool kids. This, ironically, is usually achieved by sublimating your own identity and copying the dress, behavior and musical tastes of your peer group, with all the attendant fears of making a faux pas. The realization that true happiness comes from being yourself and not caring what other people think of you comes too late for some teens. Don’t be one of them. Make note of these teenage stress management relief tips.
